Geniatech’s Full-Color E-Paper Partial Refresh Technology Wins 2025–2026 ePaper Innovation “Pioneering” Award

Geniatech’s award-winning full-color e-paper partial refresh technology enables dynamic transition effects without full-screen flashing, bringing smoother visual interaction to digital signage, smart transportation, and low-power display applications.

Geniatech has achieved a breakthrough in full-color e-paper interaction by enabling dynamic special-effect transitions during partial refresh — a capability previously unavailable in commercial e-paper displays. The innovation was recognized today with the 2025–2026 ePaper Creativity and Innovation “Pioneering” Award at the 4th ePaper Industry Innovation Conference in Shenzhen, one of the display industry’s most closely watched innovation honors. The award was decided by a review committee formed by the ePaper Industry Alliance together with CINNO’s ePaper Insight and the Alliance’s executive council.

Solving a Problem the Industry Had Accepted as Unsolvable

E-paper displays are widely valued for their low power consumption and eye-friendly viewing experience, and have seen rapid adoption across retail, transportation, and office environments. But the technology has long carried a well-known limitation: updating on-screen content typically requires a multi-second, full-screen flash, and partial refresh has not been achievable. In digital signage and public transit applications, this full-screen flicker can feel dated and does little to capture a viewer’s attention — a constraint the industry had generally treated as an unavoidable consequence of e-paper’s underlying physics.

Geniatech’s engineering team set out to challenge that assumption. Building on an FPGA platform, the team developed an approach combining 8-bit grayscale template-mapped phase shifting with a dual-dimension lookup table algorithm, enabling dynamic transition effects to be layered directly into the partial refresh process. The result is a fusion of “partial refresh” and “animated transition effects” that had not previously been demonstrated in e-paper displays.

In practice, this means an e-paper screen no longer needs to flash in its entirety to update content. Instead, it can render layered transition effects — such as blinds, ripples, or gradients — confined to the specific region where content is changing, while the rest of the display remains completely still. The effect draws the eye precisely to what has changed, which can meaningfully improve dwell time and engagement in retail and signage settings, all while preserving the calm, paper-like readability that makes e-paper displays distinctive.

The review committee recognized the submission as the world’s first full-color e-paper partial refresh technology with dynamic special effects, noting that it breaks through the long-standing limitation of e-paper refresh being confined to full-screen, whole-display updates.

Performance Validated Without Compromising E-Paper’s Core Advantages

The technology was evaluated against e-paper’s traditional strengths to confirm the innovation didn’t come at their expense. In testing, flicker was controlled to below 4 Hz — well under the threshold of human perceptibility — while ghosting remained at or below 0.8%, on par with conventional refresh methods. Power consumption in the refreshed area was reduced by more than 40%, with the added visual effects introducing no additional energy cost.

The technology was first shown publicly in August 2025 at the IOTE Shenzhen International Internet of Things Exhibition, where it drew significant industry attention. After reviewing the demonstration, Zuo Qiang, Secretary-General of the ePaper Industry Alliance, described it as a remarkable technical innovation that gives the e-paper industry an entirely new capability for building differentiated products, calling it a significant contribution to the industry’s development.

In October 2025, the underlying research was published in the national-level journal Information Technology and Standardization under the title “Design of Dynamic Special Effects for Spectra 6 Full-Color E-Paper Screen Transitions Based on FPGA.” Through 2026, the technology has been featured at CES, ISE, Embedded World, and COMPUTEX, generating strong interest from customers worldwide.
